THE PATH TO PARIS: Olympic Qualifying Series

Sport climbing is gearing up for its highly anticipated second appearance at the upcoming Paris 2024 Games.

GB Climbing's Toby Roberts excelled at the combined European Olympic Qualifiers held in Laval back in October, securing his coveted ticket to Paris 2024. This historic accomplishment not only marks a significant milestone for Roberts but also establishes him as the first male sport climber to represent Team GB at the Olympic Games.

 

Exploring the Olympic Qualifying Series (OQS)

The Olympic Qualifying Series (OQS) stands as the vital final Paris 2024 qualification opportunity pathway for athletes who have yet to secure their place.

The OQS comprises of two events scheduled in two cities in 2024.

  • Shanghai, China. 16-19 May

  • Budapest (Hungary). 20-23 June

 

Each OQS event encompasses two sport climbing disciplines for each gender: Speed and the combined Boulder & Lead event.

In the combined Boulder & Lead competition, the top 48 athletes per gender, not yet qualified have received invitations from the International Federation of Sport Climbing (IFSC). These invitations have been determined by their 2023 World Ranking Score, and each nation has a maximum of four quotas per gender.

The Speed competition have extended invitations to the top 32 athletes per gender based on their 2023 World Ranking Score.

The following GB Climbing athletes are eligible for entry into the Olympic Qualifying Series:

  • Max Milne (combined)

  • Jack MacDougall (combined)

  • Jim Pope (combined)

  • Molly Thompson Smith (combined)

  • Erin McNeice (combined)

 

Qualification for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games

With a new sport climbing competition format introduced for Paris 2024, a total of 20 athletes per gender will compete in the combined boulder &lead event at the Games. Each National Olympic Committee (NOC) is eligible for a maximum of four quotas, featuring two male and two female athletes.

Currently, ten athletes have already secured their spots in the combined competition for the 2024 Games, leaving room for intense competition in the upcoming year and 10 quota places up for grabs per gender at OQS

The sport climbing competition at Paris 2024 is scheduled to be held from 5 – 10 August 2024, in Le Bourget.
